I’m four. I look up. I say ”I love you.” She turns towards me quickly, tears in her eyes, and backhands me to the floor…

I meet God when I’m seven. I’ve seen Him all along. He carries me through all of the experiences. (Isa. 46:4)

One of my stepdads has returned home drunk. I hear him yelling at my mom. I hear things thrown and broken. I hear my mom scream. I peek around the corner of my bedroom door to see my my mom crumple to the floor in the corner.

My stepdad looms over her as if to continue his barrage of yelling and striking her. I run up behind him, hitting him in the back to distract him from her. He turns on me. He punches me in the face and throws me across the room. He storms out the door, slamming it as he goes.

I’m in a corner of my room. My lips are bleeding. My face is swollen and black and blue. I feel my heartbeat in my left cheekbone.

A soft voice whispers, “I never intended for him to do that to you. I never intended for you to experience this. If I take away his choices I cannot be God. I love you, I will carry you through …”

He does…
