“The Arameans had gone out to raid the Israelites and had taken a little girl as a captive. This little girl served Naaman’s wife. She said to her mistress, “I wish my master would meet the prophet who lives in Samaria. He would cure him of his disease.” – 2 Kings 2:2-3
One of my first heroes in the Word was the unnamed ‘armor bearer’ of Jonathan who states,
“Do whatever you think is best. Go ahead. I’m with you.” – 1 Samuel 14:7
and who followed through with his word in verse 13,
“So Jonathan climbed up, using his hands and feet, and his officer climbed just behind him. Jonathan struck down the Philistines as he went, and his officer killed them as he followed behind him.” – 1 Samuel 14:13
Here, though, in today’s devotions, is a little girl, stolen from her home and forced to be a slave, who sees her master’s condition and encourages her master to go see the prophet of God and be healed.
I love Jonathan’s armor bearer.
I love serving leaders who allow me to fight alongside them.
I’ve been very blessed to have those kinds of leaders.
It hasn’t always been that way.
I’ve served a few leaders who were cruel masters.
Seeing this little girl’s single sentence in the whole Bible was a challenge to me.
Like with the armor bearer, I don’t know her name. I don’t know how she felt serving those who had taken her captive.
I do know though, that her God loved her and His love for her was the motivation to see her master healed.
I’m very certain we have all served a leader or two we may have compared to Naaman. I’m also just as certain that when we have a relationship with God, He gives us the strength and courage to pray for our masters and serve them with a genuine ‘enthusiasm’ no matter what they’ve done.
“Do your work with enthusiasm. Work as if you were serving the Lord, not as if you were serving only men and women.
Remember that the Lord will give a reward to everyone, slave or free, for doing good.” – Ephesians 6:7-8
