“16 All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for showing people what is wrong in their lives, for correcting faults, and for teaching how to live right. 17 Using the Scriptures, the person who serves God will be capable, having all that is needed to do every good work.” – 2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NCV)
Was assisting a gentleman with his testimony and message for a Sunday morning and saw in his notes a verse with the initials “TPT” at the end of it. I looked them up and found they referred to this “translation” (which it is not) of the Bible referred to as the “The Passion Translation”.
I had a flashback to a Bible study gone wrong in which a book called, “Operating in the Courts of Heaven” was introduced and quickly determined to be heretical fiction.
Some people wanted to stick to it only because their leader had recommended it, not because it was proven to be very extra-biblical.
Extra-biblical. Yeah…
So, seeing that reference to the TPT brought back a couple memories.
Today, as I was building pastor’s slides for his upcoming message, I saw 2 Timothy 3:16-17 and thought of you.
Here are a couple examples I found in my reading, of where this “translation” called TPT, takes license to promote its own religion, the NAR, which is a bit ‘extra-biblical’.
“Now, Herod, the governor, was confused and perplexed when he heard the reports of all the miracles of Jesus and his apostles. Many were saying, “John the Baptizer has come back to life!” – Luke 9:7 (TPT)
“Now Herod the tetrarch heard about all that was happening, and he was perplexed, because it was said by some that John had been raised from the dead,” – Luke 9:7 (ESV) … of Jesus and his apostles?
“That accounts for the wisdom of God, saying, ‘I will send to them apostles and prophets though some they will murder and others they will chase away.’” – Luke 11:49 (TPT)
“Therefore also the Wisdom of God said, ‘I will send them prophets and apostles, some of whom they will kill and persecute.” – Luke 11:49 (ESV) … why change the order?
There are more than I can list here.
Again, please be careful.
Know your Bible.
